I was elected to Honorary Membership of the American
Society of Arms Collectors in 1991, to Membership of the Royal Historical
Society in 1994 and to Fellowship of the Society of Antiquaries of London in
1996. These elections recognised my contributions in the field of military
historical research and publication.
In 1994, in recognition of services rendered to French
culture through my book The Auld Alliance (see Publications), I was made a Chevalier de lOrdre
des Palmes Académiques by the French government. This Order, founded
by the Emperor Napoleon I in 1808, is conferred by France upon scholars who
have enriched, or materially contributed towards, the history of French
culture.
In May 1997 I was a Research Fellow at the Yale Center
for British Art, New Haven, Connecticut, USA, where I pursued research into
British military paintings, studying the representation of uniform and
artefacts in portraits. |
