The finale of an Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

Reproduced by courtesy of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

I work closely with a wide variety of museums and art galleries, as well as with public and private cultural and heritage bodies. In this regard, I have organised and assisted with exhibitions and provided independent expert advice on curatorial and collections-management matters. This has given me a large network of contacts with such bodies, as well as within the British armed forces.

My 29 years’ experience in researching and interpreting the history of the British armed forces has very powerfully equipped me to provide accurate specialist advice on picture and period detail research for films and television. While working in Scotland, I was Historical Adviser to the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

In 1982, I assisted Professor Michael Kauffmann with his Catalogue of the Paintings in the Wellington Museum, providing accurate and detailed information on the highly specialised subject of military uniform and Orders, decorations and medals; I continue to be available to provide such help to those writing Art Historical catalogues.

I am available to write on commission. I contribute book reviews to scholarly and other publications, have a continuing programme of lectures and articles and am open to approaches to write more books. Details of my existing and forthcoming publications are available here.

  • Specialist assistance in Military History, Portraiture and Costume provided for Art Historians and others compiling catalogues of Fine, Decorative and Applied Art.
  • Cataloguing and auditing of collections of antiquities, pictures, books and archives.
  • Independent assessment of museum collections for inclusion in Conservation Plans.
  • Curation of exhibitions.
  • Picture research, for publications, films and television.
  • Period detail research for theatre, films and television.
  • Freelance writing of book reviews, articles and books on British military history and associated artefacts and antiquities.

I also work for private collectors, dealers and auction houses internationally, researching and cataloguing items in depth and bringing to bear on those commissions my 29 years’ experience as a professional museum curator and scholar with a wide knowledge of research sources and capacity for research and writing: see Committees and Memberships.

  • Provenance research into antiques in order to trace their history and to interpret and explain their inscriptions and associations. See my Portfolio page for details.
  • Genealogical research undertaken, including research in Scotland and Ireland; I have specialist knowledge of research into members of the British Armed Forces. See my Portfolio page for details of how this service can relate to historic artefacts and paintings.
  • Informed and independent assistance given in confidence to collectors about starting and building collections. See The Times article “Cutting a Dash”, Saturday 25 October 2003 and again in the "Money" section page 13, Saturday 14 February 2004.
  • Professionalism, integrity and discretion assured in acting as a broker between dealers/private collectors and public collections when a discreet or private sale is required, as well as in brokering the sale of collections or single items.
  • Independent assessment made of items being sold at auction to establish their authenticity.
  • Commissioned bidding undertaken at auction with discretion assured.

I arrange, design and lead tours of parts of the United Kingdom for small parties with specialist interests, for example: collections of antiques, “stately homes” and gardens. These have involved me in the creation and full organisation of the tours as well as in lecturing on architecture, landscape, battlefields, history and antiquities during the tours themselves.

  • Specialised tours can be created, arranged and led for groups with particular interests.
  • Fact-finding visits can be arranged and led for groups of professionals interested in Heritage interpretation or in Museums and Art Galleries in Britain and on the continent of Europe.
