A gentlemans smallsword and
scabbard, retailed by Richard Clarke, 102 Cheapside, London, with a cast and
chased silver hilt made by William Kinman of East Harding Street, London, and
hallmarked for the London assaying year of 1772-73.
A very similar sword exists at Mount
Vernon, Virginia, USA, having been presented by J.P. Morgan in 1909 as the
sword worn by George Washington upon his inauguration as first President of the
United States in 1789.
Silver hilted swords, especially
those by Kinman, have formed a research interest of mine since
c.1995.
