Existing titles

I have written three books:

  • The Scottish Soldier: an illustrated social and military history of Scotland’s fighting men through two thousand years
(Archive Publications with the National Museums of Scotland), 1987, (ISBN 0 948946 11 3)

“The virtue of Mr Wood’s book…lies…in his ability to pick out, and then elaborate upon, the key moments in the development of the Scottish soldier”
- Trevor Royle, Glasgow Herald, 18 July 1987.

“Stephen Wood has produced…a lively, interesting over-view of the Scottish soldier, which includes a general account of the tactics, weaponry and general conditions of the soldier’s lot throughout the centuries…A splendidly-produced volume with a thought-provoking text and exceptional illustrations”
- Philip J. Haythornthwaite, Military Illustrated, December 1987/January 1988.

  • In the Finest Tradition: The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers and Greys), its history and treasures
    (Mainstream, Edinburgh), 1988, (ISBN 1 85158 174 X)

“Stephen Wood…is fully familiar with the campaigns in which the regiment fought, its traditions and heirlooms and its special characteristics…Stephen Wood has a fluent, often witty, style in which he marshals and presents detailed material in an easily comprehensible form. An excellent account of a justly famous regiment”
- Philip Warner, Scotland on Sunday, 8 January 1989.

  • The Auld Alliance: Scotland and France, the military connection
    (Mainstream, Edinburgh), 1989, (ISBN 1 85158 215 O).

“…a splendid book, rich in prose, pictures and substance. Well researched in detail and comprehensive in outlook…Stephen Wood shows his true competence and knowledge here with a brilliant selection of pictures and prose…”
- George Currie, Scottish World, May 1990.

“…a well-known writer on Scottish military affairs…by far the best effort to date…his illustrational resources have provided a fair number of artefacts of interest to the collector…the text should prove rewarding to the casual reader as well as the military/civil historian.”
- Andrew Mowbray, Man at Arms, March/April 1990.
